After crowning a stupendous UEFA Champions League campaign with a brace in the final, Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute to his team for showcasing its class when it counted.
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 20th minute, converting a fine pass from Dani Carvajal. Mario Mandzukic then equalized for Juventus with a wonder-goal, but a deflected Casemiro effort restored Real Madrid’s lead.
Just minutes later, the Portuguese star killed off the contest with his second of the night, with a further late goal from Marco Asensio rounding off the 4-1 scoreline.
“[Zinedine Zidane] knows that we’re very good, and we showed that we are very good,” the 32-year-old told Atresmedia and BeIN Sports after the final whistle.
“It has been an impressive end to the season,” he added.
The Ballon d’Or favourite further reiterated his coach’s influence in preparing the team properly.
“I prepared for this, and we knew that the big trophies are won right at the end,” Ronaldo stated.
“Zidane spoke to us positively and transmitted his belief to us.”
Finally, the Euro 2016 winner shared his feelings on Real’s feat of winning back-to-back Champions League trophies, as well as his own individual performances, before touching on what comes next.”We’re the first team to win the Champions League two years running, I scored two goals in the final and I’m the top scorer in the competition this season, so I’m happy,” Ronaldo beamed.
“It’s another record for us and we deserve it.
“The goal now is to win the next Champions League as we won this one, showing that we’re the best and taking advantage of the support we had right from the beginning.”
